Imortal loses final of the Portuguese Basketball Cup against Benfica

Game was decided by a free throw by Benfica player Tony Douglas, 5,9 seconds from time, which gave victory to the Lisbon team

The Imortal de Albufeira lost this Sunday, the 30th, the final of the 2022/23 edition of the Portuguese Basketball Cup, by just 75-74, against Benfica, in a game full of emotion played at the Municipal Pavilion of Sines.

For the history of the game, there is the excellent entry into the match of the Algarve team that, right in the first quarter, managed to put itself in the lead of the match with a partial of 27-18. The “eagles” responded in the 2nd quarter, the moment of the game when they managed to reverse the score and move to the lead of the match (35-43).

Despite the turnaround, the Algarve team did not give up and managed to recover the eight points of disadvantage they brought to the final ten minutes. The good half of the Algarve was essential to draw the match and force the decision of the game to the last seconds.

With four consecutive points, Benfica's Toney Douglas managed to close the match, although Marquise Moore still had the opportunity to give the “Cup” to Imortal.

 

 

Marquise Moore (23pts, 10res, 5ast, 1dl) and Terry Nolan Jr. (20pts, 5res, 2ast, 3rb) were the most combative in the Algarve team, while in the “eagles” the MVP of the final, Makram Ben-Romdhane (17pts, 10res, 3ast, 1rb), Terrell Carter II (12pts , 3res, 1rb, 3dl), Toney Douglas (12pts, 2res, 7ast) and even “Betinho” Gomes (10pts, 3res, 1rb).

The day before, Imortal had qualified for the final of the Portuguese Cup, after beating SC Lusitânia, by 82-77.

This was the 23rd time that Benfica won the Portuguese Basketball Cup.

Benfica, who haven't won the trophy since the 2016/2017 season, have 23 cups, against 14 for FC Porto and eight for Sporting.
