ARCA and Philharmonic of São Brás take “O Homem do Fogo” to Serralves

Show combines sand animation in real time with music and storytelling

ARCA – Associação Recreativa do Algarve and the São Brás de Alportel Philharmonic Band will present the "The Man of Fire" at Serralves Gardens, on Saturday, May 13, 21 pm, as part of the Bioblitz festival.

“O Homem do Fogo” is a creation made of sand animation in real time by the artist Pilar Puyana, with a soundtrack and live sound design by the Banda Filarmónica de São Brás de Alportel and narration by the storyteller Fernando Guerreiro.

«The creation of this show relied on the essential work of Lilia Parreira, director and creator who for several years has been developing work of enormous quality and importance in the cultural and human panorama of São Brás de Alportel through the theater group TEAS13», according to ARCA .

"The Man of Fire" premiered in September 2020, in São Brás de Alportel, having returned in December 2022, when he passed through Alcoutim, São Marcos da Serra and Aljezur.

According to Fernando Guerreiro, ARCA's creative director and storyteller, «this project allowed us to bring together the creative strength of several people in São Brás de Alportel and create a high quality artistic object that made everyone immensely happy, showing that from a territory that is far from the big centers it is possible to create high quality artistic objects».

«Taking the show to the Serralves Gardens is the culmination of a search and research process to raise awareness of a theme that is increasingly having an impact on our lives», he added.

The show has the support of the municipality of São Brás de Alportel from the outset and is the result of a joint production between ARCA and the São Brás de Alportel Philharmonic Band within the scope of a partnership between the Ministry of Culture and AGIF, with with the support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, which in 2020 launched the project “Teatro Chama – Não Brinques com o Fogo” aiming, “through the arts, to raise awareness among populations to change their risk behaviors in the face of rural fires and to promote the enhancement and protection of their territories».

The fusion between sand animation, music by an ensemble of eight musicians and words make this show a memorable moment, with strong messages about respect and preservation of Nature. This show aims to sensitize audiences of different ages to sustainability, with a contemporary narrative, «through the connection between exploratory, scientific, artistic and cultural methodologies, inspired by the Sustainable Development Goal of the 2030 Agenda, “Protect Life on Earth”».

For Albano Neto, musical director and conductor of the Banda Filarmónica de São Brás de Alportel, «this is an excellent opportunity to give the musicians of our band the possibility to play on one of the most prestigious stages in our country. Being able to bring our music to Serralves brings with it a great responsibility and at the same time an enormous satisfaction in seeing our work recognised».

BioBlitz is a pedagogical and scientific event, within the scope of education and awareness of Biodiversity, the Environment and Sustainability, which seeks to raise awareness of the fauna and flora of Serralves Park through the exploration of scientific, artistic and cultural methodologies – a contemporary narrative for sustainability, inspired by the Sustainable Development Goal of the 2030 Agenda, “Protect Life on Earth”.
