Twenty municipalities in the districts of Faro, Portalegre, Santarém and Castelo Branco today present a very high danger of rural fire, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).
The IPMA has placed under this alert the municipalities of Monchique, Lagos, Portimão, Silves, Loulé, Tavira and São Brás de Alportel, in the Algarve, as well as Marvão, Portalegre, Castelo de Vide, Nisa and Gavião, in the district of Portalegre.
The municipalities of Mação, Vila Nova de Barquinha, Abrantes, Chamusca, Constância, Sardoal, in the district of Santarém, and the municipalities of Vila Velha de Ródão and Proença-a-Nova, in the district of Castelo Branco, are also at very high risk of fire, according to information published on the IPMA website.
About 60 other municipalities in the districts of Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Leiria, Portalegre, Santarém, Lisbon, Beja and Faro are at high risk of fire.
The fire risk determined by the IPMA has five levels, ranging from reduced to maximum.
Calculations are obtained from air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere forecasts partly cloudy skies for today, with temporarily very cloudy on the coast north of Cabo Raso until mid-morning.
The wind will generally blow weak from several directions, blowing moderately from the north/northwest on the west coast, especially during the afternoon, and sometimes strong from the north quadrant in the highlands until mid-morning and from late afternoon onwards.
Forecasts also point to the possibility of formation of fog or morning fog on the North and Center coast and to a small rise in maximum temperature.
Maximum temperatures will fluctuate between 23 degrees Celsius in Viana do Castelo, Porto and Viseu and 32 degrees in Santarém, Beja and Évora.
