Ordem dos Médicos creates an independent commission to assess negligence at Hospital de Faro

Carlos Cortes, the president of the OM, says that the case has to be evaluated in more depth, because “there are signs of some seriousness”

The Ordem dos Médicos (OM) announced today the creation of a technical-scientific commission of independent physicians to assess alleged errors and cases of negligence in the surgery service of Hospital de Faro.

The OM's decision comes after a meeting today with the Minister of Health, Manuel Pizarro.

According to the president of the OM, Carlos Cortes, the case has to be evaluated in more depth, because "there are indications of some seriousness".

On Monday, the Public Ministry (MP) initiated a process about alleged errors and cases of negligence in the surgery service of Hospital de Faro denounced by an internal physician at the Judiciary Police.

According to the doctor, in question are cases that occurred between January and March with 11 patients, of which “three died, two are hospitalized in intermediate care” and the rest had bodily injury associated with medical error, ranging from accidental castration, loss of kidneys or the need for a colostomy for life.
