Olhão promotes initiatives around the prevention of child abuse

Throughout the month, the Town Hall building will light up in blue

Olhão is promoting various initiatives around the prevention of child abuse during this month dedicated to the topic.

Throughout the month, the Town Hall building will light up in blue and a challenge has been launched to the council entities to also light up their buildings.

«The citizens can also join this movement, illuminating their house with this color, or turning on a blue light», suggests the municipality.

On the 28th of April, at 9:30 am, at the Municipal Stadium, students from public and private schools in the municipality will “build” a human blue ribbon, in order to raise awareness in the school community and the population in general for the prevention of abuse in the childhood.

At the end, there will be a dance class, by the Association Outsiders Art and Dance Studios.

This is, moreover, a theme that will be addressed throughout the month in schools, which will develop activities suitable for each age group.

The Blue Ribbon Campaign began in 1989 in the United States, when Bonnie W.Finney tied a blue ribbon to the antenna of her car, as a tribute to her two grandchildren, both victims of abuse. Blue, which symbolizes the color of injuries, would serve as a constant reminder to her of her struggle to protect children from violence and neglect.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines abuse or mistreatment of children as "all forms of physical or psychological injury, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, commercial or other exploitation, resulting in actual or potential harm to the child's health, survival, development or dignity, in the context of a relationship of responsibility, trust or power».

The initiatives are promoted in partnership with the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People.
