In Ameixial, before walking, there is talk of investment in biodiversity

NATUREZA 22 Mission joins the Ameixial Walking Festival

Biodiversity and the financing of nature conservation will be highlighted in a session that the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) will organize in the village of Ameixial, on the 28th of April, as part of the Walking Festival that will take place on from that day until the 30th of April in this parish in the interior of Loulé.

The session that will take place at Ameixial will have as its theme “Innovating in Biodiversity Investment”, which is Objective 7 of the NATURE 22 Mission, the program under which the initiative takes place.

More than a presentation session, this will be an opportunity for participants to get directly involved in this theme, through a participatory and collaborative meeting, which will be promoted by NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA).

The session will also feature speeches by Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, Nuno Banza, president of the ICNF, and João Rui Ferreira, president of the Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR), as keynote speaker.

On the table will be the funding sources for nature conservation, which, according to the ICNF, are essentially three.

In addition to public funding and patronage, the latter an «almost marginal part of conservation funding», conservation is financed by the economy, «which has positive effects on conservation and is responsible for the vast majority of resources that generate biodiversity».

Eliminating blockages and resolving «the market failure that prevents remuneration for services of collective interest, such as the production of biodiversity and the management of natural values», are two of the objectives of the session, says the ICNF.

Sign-ups for the session must be done here.

The association of the Caminhaxial Festival with the Nature Mission 22, which aimed, throughout the Portuguese Natural Heritage Year, celebrated in 2022, to involve society in general in the enhancement of the territory and nature conservation, turns out to be a recognition of the contribution of the festival for this purpose.

In addition to making known a deserted territory, through an activity that is carried out in harmony with natural values, the Walking Festival Ameixial (WFA) brings financial return and animation to the village that gives it its name and to surrounding localities.

In 2023 it will be no different, as the Sul Informação it's already done.

Beyond traditional walks, some of them new, this year's edition of the festival has a Glamping area, where you can camp in comfort, in large and «super comfortable» tents, but also with new intervention in the haystack of Corte d'Ouro.

As festival registrations and meal reservations are made online, but many of the activities are already sold out. the complete program can be consulted here.

The Walking Festival Ameixial is an initiative of the Cooperative for the Development of Low Density Territories (QRER), organized by Proactivetur and the ESTELA Project and has the support of the Municipality of Loulé, the Tourism Region of the Algarve, the Parish Council of Ameixial and Grupo Desportivo Ameixalense, ICNF – Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, APA-Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente, Sul Informação, Loulé Municipal Museum, Ana Aeroportos, Visacar and Decathlon, forming part of the territorial dynamics of the aspiring Algarvensis Geopark.
