Ana Abrunhosa guarantees support in the rehabilitation and consolidation of Castro Marim Castle

This is an investment that will amount to 10 million euros

On a visit to the Municipality of Castro Marim, the Minister of Territorial Cohesion Ana Abrunhosa guaranteed support in the rehabilitation and consolidation of the Castle.

According to the municipality, the challenge had already been launched in a first visit to the territory, during the Council of Ministers in the Algarve, which took place in February, and an agreement was soon secured for the constitution of an inter-ministerial group, in order to create a concertation platform for this project «of national interest, essential for the diversification of the economic base and the enhancement of the national heritage, which cannot be hostage to procedures that make the necessary financial mechanisms unfeasible».

In a note, the Municipality recalls that for more than 40 years it has been trying to unblock a structured intervention in Castelo da Vila, given that the monument «needs an urgent and consolidated intervention, but that has been consecutively conditioned and stopped by the ineffectiveness between the financial mechanisms and the technical mechanisms needed to move forward».

The rehabilitation will include a series of interventions, divided into several phases – consolidation of the ring road, consolidation of the walled structure, rehabilitation and re-functionalization of the interior of the Castle – whose investment will amount to 10 million euros.

In addition to preventing the collapse of the current structure, the intervention will constitute the Castle «as a tourist and cultural equipment with high potential for the provision of events», says the municipality.
