EMARP sensitized Portimão students to selective collection of organic waste

During the Regional Meeting of Environmental Volunteers for Water

An awareness-raising action on the selective collection of organic waste was the contribution given by the Municipal Water and Waste Company of Portimão to the programming of the 8th Young ERVAA – Regional Meeting of Environmental Volunteering for Water, which took place at EB 2/3 Júdice Fialho .

The initiative was organized by the Portuguese Environment Agency and was attended by students from the 4th to the 9th year of this school group.

In the action it developed, EMARP highlighted "why it is so important to separate food waste and how participants can do it at home, together with their parents, to prevent this waste from being deposited in landfills and can be transformed into 100% natural fertilizer», according to the Portimonian municipal company.

«In this edition, the EMARP environmental awareness team introduced new activities with the aim of reinforcing the importance of valuing, through proper separation, all the recyclable waste we produce, focusing the narrative on the urgent need to divert raw materials from the landfill», added.

During the activities, the approximately 270 participating children, aged between 9 and 11, «showed knowledge and interest in the theme of waste separation, actively participating in games and interacting with pertinent questions, demonstrating that this is a curious generation and awakens to environmental issues».

The sessions ended with the distribution of gifts and a request addressed to the families residing in the pilot area to start separating the leftover food «and pick up, free of charge, at EMARP, the 7-liter bucket for this purpose».
