Daniel Martínez wins the 49th edition of the Volta ao Algarve in the final time trial

Martínez, 26, set the fourth fastest time of the day

The Colombian cyclist Daniel Martínez (INEOS) won today the 49th edition of the Volta ao Algarve, by being fourth in the individual time trial of the fifth and final stage, won by the Swiss Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ).

Martínez, 26 years old, had the fourth best time of the day, 16 seconds below the 29.34 minutes achieved by Küng, fastest in the 24,4 kilometers disputed in Lagoa, ahead of Frenchman Rémi Cavagna (Soudal-QuickStep), second, the four seconds, and the Italian Filippo Ganna (INEOS), third, at 10 seconds.

Overall, the Colombian was two seconds ahead of Hour record holder Filippo Ganna, his teammate, in second place, with Belgian Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep) in third place, 15 seconds behind the winner. João Almeida (UAE Emirates) ended up as the best Portuguese, in sixth, 40 seconds away.

The Colombian, who had been third in 2022, succeeds the Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who had triumphed in the race last year for the second time, after a first victory in 2020.
