In just one month of operation, 33 thousand activations of the Digital Mobile Key (CMD) with biometrics were registered, through the Gov Authentication mobile application, making it the main activation channel, with 29% of the total carried out.
The CMD, a means of authentication and digital signature certified by the Portuguese State, associates a mobile phone number to the civil identification number, for a Portuguese citizen, and the passport number or title/residence card for a foreign citizen.
This association, from the mobile phone number to the identification document number, guarantees a double security factor, through a PIN and a temporary code sent to the mobile phone or to the e-mail.
According to the Secretary of State for Digitization and Administrative Modernization, “the activation process of the CMD using biometrics is an initiative included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan and unlocks one of the safest ways to identify people, with a guarantee of protection of data. Each citizen, without having to go to a counter, can activate their CMD. Using the cell phone camera, facial identification is carried out, as well as the comparison and verification of the data contained in the identification document, in order to confirm the identity of the citizen”.
Authentication with CMD allows you to access and perform online services from public and private entities, such as: Banking, Telecommunications, Energy, Health, Tourism, among others. It is also possible to digitally sign documents, or have identification documents on your mobile phone, with all the convenience and security.
Since 2015, the Agency for Administrative Modernization has counted around 3 million active CMDs, registering more than 65 million authentications. The process can be done in person, online or, since January 2023, by Biometrics or video call.
