Portimão City Council announces «extraordinary support package for students and families»

Executive PS rejected a PSD proposal to award a scholarship to all university students who submitted applications

The Portimão City Council intends to create an «extraordinary package of support for students and families», which will be «presented and discussed with the Municipal Education Council» and, as such, with «representatives of the educational community», on the 23rd of February .

The announcement of this intention by the PS city council executive took place during the discussion of a proposal by the Portimão PSD councillors, «which intended to extend the allocation of university scholarships to all students who submitted applications, regardless of the application of the criteria, contrary to the previous Council deliberation that set the amounts and number of scholarships to be awarded», according to the Portimão Council.

This proposal was rejected by those elected by the PS, in a majority in the City Council, who justified their position in a declaration of vote, where they stated that they were unavailable «to discuss individual measures, devoid of any kind of holistic vision, socially unjust, and whose sole purpose is to serve as a political weapon in the PSD social networks in Portimão».

The extraordinary package of measures that will be proposed is «transversal and related to the different social levels and levels of education», assures the executive.

The new extraordinary package will be "deliberated shortly at a chamber meeting together with the respective financial envelope".
