University of Algarve debates new way of thinking about contemporary audiovisual

“Quality and media competence in contemporary serial fiction in Brazil and Portugal” was launched in the “Humanitas” collection of the Center for Research in Arts and Communication at the University of Algarve

The new way of thinking about contemporary audiovisual is discussed in the work “Quality and media competence in contemporary serial fiction in Brazil and Portugal”, launched in the “Humanitas” collection of the Center for Research in Arts and Communication (CIAC) of the University of Algarve, by Grácio Editor.

According to the UAlg, what constitutes quality audiovisual is a question that has been debated for forty years.

According to Gabriela Borges, professor at the University of Algarve (Portugal), collaborator of the Graduate Program in Communication at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora and coordinator of the Audiovisual Quality Observatory, the discussion about the quality of an audiovisual product was previously focused on in the way it was conceived by its creators.

«This flow, which begins to be generated from the media, now allows the engagement of the public directly. Understanding how the aesthetic experience takes place on social networks, how this public interacts, comments and creates content is what we are trying to understand », he says. Gabriela points out that in addition to production, the proposal is also to think about circulation – how companies distribute and disseminate content through social networks – and consumption – how the public appropriates these works.

The researcher states that quality audiovisual has the potential to develop important skills related to media. «As the scriptwriters and directors are working on elements of this series, which in a way encourage the audience to fill in the gaps, to think about subjects that they hadn’t thought about yet, to produce content based on what they see on the screen such as, for example, in the case of fan fiction. These are questions that we seek answers with this new proposal».

The book was developed by the research group integrated in the Quality Observatory in Audiovisual, coordinated by Gabriela. Approaching fictional series from the biggest producers in Portuguese, Brazil and Portugal, the analyzes discuss the Brazilian productions Assédio, from Globoplay, Coisa Mais Linda, from Netflix, and Todxs Nós, from HBO and the Portuguese Casa do Cais, from RTP.
