Albufeira Civil Protection will train students in “Basic Life Support”

Civil Protection Heroes Project was distinguished in 2021, with an Honorable Mention in the Recognition Award for Good Local Practices in Resilience Promotion

Around three thousand students in the municipality of Albufeira receive training and awareness-raising activities on topics related to civil protection every year. Some of these actions are part of the “Civil Protection Heroes” project, distinguished under the Recognition Prize for Good Local Practices in Promoting Resilience.

However, the municipality plans to train young people in secondary education in Basic Life Support (BLS), in order to acquire basic skills necessary for pre-hospital assistance.

The main objective of the Civil Protection Heroes project is to sensitize young people to the adoption of preventive behavior in the face of different risks, to know how to act and how to acquire safety habits. It is intended to teach the youngest to prepare a Family Emergency Plan, an Emergency Kit and an Animal Emergency Kit, among others.

Streamlined according to the different age groups, these actions are developed around two major projects: “The Heroes of Civil Protection” (approach to Covid-19, Natural Phenomena, Street Safety and Fires) and “We and the Risks ” with the subthemes Natural Risks – Drought, Floods/Floods, Tornadoes, Thunderstorms, Cold Waves, Heat Waves, Rural Fires and Earthquakes/Tsunamis – and Technological Risks – Urban Fires, Industrial Accidents and Transport of Hazardous Materials.

Alongside these projects, the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Albufeira also develops, throughout the school year and in conjunction with other Civil Protection agents present in the municipality, the following actions: “The Importance of the Citizen in Civil Protection”, “The First Aider”, “Learning to Save” and “Basic Life Support”.

“It is understood by all that our children and young people can be fundamental and great agents of change, not only by acquiring skills, but by transmitting information to their peers and family, thus contributing to a culture of prevention”, says the President of the Chamber José Carlos Rolo.

In addition to actions carried out in schools, the Municipal Civil Protection Service also participates, occasionally and whenever requested for this purpose, in awareness-raising actions at companies and institutions.

According to the councilor responsible for the department, Cláudia Guedelha, there will soon be news regarding training and awareness actions: “it is intended to start the training/awareness process for all secondary school students in Basic Life Support soon (SBV), which will aim at acquiring basic skills necessary for pre-hospital assistance, as an act of social responsibility and civic awareness”.
