Monchique celebrates 250 years of elevation to municipality with videomapping and concert

The creation of the municipality of Monchique was formalized by the Royal Charter of D. José on January 16, 1773

a show of videomapping, a concert by the Orquestra Sinfónica do Algarve and the presentation of a book. This is how Monchique will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its elevation to municipality during the month of January. 

The celebrations begin this Sunday, the 15th, at 18 pm, with the Igreja Matriz de Monchique hosting the concert “As Quatro Estações”, by Vivaldi, by the Orquestra Sinfónica do Algarve – Algarve Camerata.

At 19:15 pm, there will be a show of videomapping on the outside wall of the church with projection of images of Monchique, «in a tribute to the past and the present».

On Monday, in the auditorium of Escola Básica Manuel do Nascimento, the conference “The elevation of Monchique to a municipality” will take place, with a presentation of the book “Elevation of Monchique to a village”, by Ana Rita Mateus.

On this day, the presentation of the Royal Charter will also take place, in the Town Hall, and the formal session, with the presence of Paulo Alves, Mayor of Monchique.

Monchique was elevated to a municipality in 1773, during the reign of King José I, separating itself from the municipality of Silves.

The creation of the municipality of Monchique was thus formalized by the Royal Charter of D. José on 16 January 1773.
