Construction of houses to relocate 49 families in Praia de Faro was awarded

The project has a two-year execution period.

The construction work of 49 houses in Montenegro, in Faro, intended for the rehousing of many other families that currently live in Praia de Faro, has already been awarded and should be completed within about two years.

The Chamber of Faro revealed today that the contract was awarded to the company Construções Gabriel AS Couto and should cost around 5 million euros.

The dwellings are intended for housing under a lease supported by the Municipality.

The work will be co-financed by the Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU), under the 1st Law Programme, with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Program (PRR).

The signing of the contracts with the IHRU that allow the progress of this work took place in Faro, in June 2022. On the occasion, Rogério Bacalhau, mayor of Faro, highlighted the importance of applications made by the Municipality to guarantee funding from the PRR, as well as the approval of the Local Housing Strategy of the Municipality of Faro (ELHMF), «an instrument that involves an investment of more than 25 million euros, with an impact on more than 350 families, between supported leasing and sales at controlled costs and without which it would not be possible to carry out such applications».

«The municipality already foresees new applications for this area, in addition to the revision of the Local Housing Strategy, in order to contemplate new projects, namely around 270 new dwellings for sale at controlled costs in Estoi», reveals the farense mayor.

For Rogério Bacalhau, «taking into account the limited resources at their disposal and the ever-increasing range of competences that they are called upon to assume», the municipalities cannot fully bear the costs of these investments, being «financing, state or community», such as what is guaranteed by contracts with the IHRU, «absolutely central in the process of construction of social housing».

The mayor from Faro also stated that in the light of the Basic Housing Law, «the State cannot neglect the effective guarantee of the right to decent housing for all citizens, which constitutes one of the most visible expressions of the social condition of our populations».
