CHUA receives Laparoscopy Tower donated by Rotary Clubs of the Algarve

The equipment will be installed in the Surgery Operating Room and will benefit the specialties of Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Urology and Otorhinolaryngology

The Portimão Unit of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve received, on Friday, January 27, a Laparoscopy Tower donated on the initiative of the Rotary Clubs of the Algarve – Rotary Club de Lagos.

The equipment will be installed in the Surgery's Operating Room and will benefit the specialties of Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Urology and Otorhinolaryngology.

During the Laparoscopy Tower handover ceremony, which took place in the auditorium of the Portimão hospital, the President of the Board of Directors Ana Varges Gomes thanked the initiative of the Rotary Clubs of the Algarve, in particular the Rotary Club of Lagos, which during the last two years it organized several events to raise funds for the acquisition of this equipment.

“CHUA has many shortcomings, it went without investment for a long time and we thought that this project would be transformative for the region. With this equipment, [the Rotarians] are able to attract more doctors to the region, as they like to work with technology at the service of people”, said Ana Varges Gomes.

Anabela Bonin, on the other hand, recognized, in this delivery, the spirit of mission of all the Rotary Clubs of the Algarve, of their companions and sponsors, who from the first moment embraced this cause and defined this as their main objective.

“It is important to believe in order to be able to achieve”, stressed the representative of the Rotarians of the Algarve.

This equipment now donated, whose value amounts to more than 100 thousand euros, is “essential and will allow great gains for the patient: less time in the hospital and less pain, reducing the hospitalization time from 10 to 15 days to 3 to 5 days ”, recognized Mahomede Americano, director of the Surgery Service 2 of the Portimão Hospital Unit.

Anticipating the theme of this Rotary year “Imagine Rotary”, the vice-governor of District 1960, Paulo Martins, congratulated the Rotary Clubs of the Algarve for putting this project into practice, leaving the message that “as a team we can transform and change lives” .

“The social responsibility issues that are carried out by these organizations and the acquisition of equipment of this nature will improve health care in the Algarve”, highlighted Henrique Graça, head of cabinet of the Câmara de Lagos.

Finally, Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, thanked the CHUA Board of Directors and the professionals for the excellent work they carry out daily and praised the Rotary movement, leaving a word of esteem, gratitude and heartfelt recognition for this important civic movement. “The reduction in hospitalization time is a tremendous evolution”, she said, referring to the equipment donated to Centro Hospitalar.
