The Rural Development Program (PDR) 2020 counted, until October, 1341 applications from the Algarve.

According to the Regional Directorate for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Algarve, «these applications represent an eligible investment of around 125 million euros, of which 84 million correspond to public support».

Of the different areas that make up the program, the measures relating to “Competitiveness and Organization of Production” concentrate the greatest number of candidacies, and the highest percentages of investment and public aid, and within these measures are the actions relating to “Improving the Irrigation Efficiency” and “Investments in Agricultural Explorations” of young people (up to 40 years of age) and other farmers who represent the largest share, both in number of applications and approved amounts.

The area relating to “Environment, Efficient Use of Resources and Climate”, which concentrates measures to support the forest, registers an approved incentive of around 15 million euros.

Measure 10 – Leader, under the responsibility of the Local Action Groups (Vicentina, In Loco and Terras do Baixo Guadiana), accounts for close to 350 candidacies so far.

As of January 2023, a new support program is expected to come into effect, called PEPAC – Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy for Portugal, which will run between 2023 and 2027.
