The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (Portimão) may once again host the Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix as early as 2023, replacing China on the calendar.

The possibility was advanced by Sporttv.

According to this television channel, negotiations are already underway to bring F1 back to Portimão [the Autodromo hosted a race in 2020], after the Chinese Grand Prix, scheduled for April 14 and 16, was cancelled.

In an official statement, the F1 organization explained that the Chinese race will not take place "due to the ongoing difficulties presented by Covid-19".

The final decision on whether Portimão is the destination chosen to replace China should be known during the month of December, as the new calendar has to be approved by the World Council of the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

Speaking to Bola Branca, from Rádio Renascença, Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, has already assumed that she «would be extremely happy» if Formula 1 really returned to the Algarve.

«Formula 1 is the premier race seen by millions of people. It would take the name of the Algarve and Portugal to millions of people and allow an economic fit for the region. It would be good for the Algarve and for Portugal», he considered in the same statements.

O Sul Informação tried to contact Paulo Pinheiro, director of Parkalgar, which manages the Autódromo, but, until the time of publication of this article, it was not possible to hear from this person in charge.
