The exhibition “Isolino Vaz. A Different Man (1922-1992), which will honor this artist who had on Ilha do Farohis «refuge» where he spent «long seasons of fruitful creation», has an opening scheduled for this Saturday, November 26th, at 17:00 pm, at the Municipal Museum of Faro.

The exhibition was constructed in a dialogic manner, in a partnership between the Municipal Museum of Faro, the centennial organizing committee and private collectors, with the support of the União de Freguesias de Faro.

«This exhibition offers a sample of the artistic personality and development of the career of Isolino Vaz, an artist associated with the Portuguese neorealist movement of the mid-XNUMXth century and who, although recognized and inscribed in the history of national art, remains little known to the general public. », says the Chamber of Faro.

With a path divided between the studio and the classroom, Isolino Vaz (Vila Nova de Gaia, 1922 – Lisbon, 1992) graduated in Painting at the Porto Superior School of Fine Arts (1956) and embraced a career as a visual artist. and teacher, counting among his students some cultural personalities such as the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira or the artist Joana Vasconcelos.

« The Island of Farol (in the municipality of Faro) has become the artist’s summer retreat since the mid-60s, where he spent long periods of fruitful artistic creation», says the Farense municipality.

«The celebration of the artist's centenary, until April 2023, with a set of activities that take place from North to South of the country, gathering the support and partnership of several municipalities, universities and cultural associations, constitutes an opportunity to revive the memory of his plastic journey and see, review or discover works that are in private collections and that, therefore, can rarely be seen and appreciated», he adds.

Curated by Daniel Santana (Municipal Museum of Faro) and Elsa Vaz (the artist's daughter), the exhibition allows the visitor to discover a multifaceted artist through a multitude of registers, from drawing to painting, passing through sculpture, ceramics, engraving, illustration, among other artistic techniques.

«The formative and affirming years, the neorealist awareness and versatility that characterize Isolino Vaz's artistic performance are the thematic matrices that build the exhibition's discourse, punctuated at all times by recordings of one of her favorite practices: the portrait », according to the municipality.

“Isolino Vaz. A Different Man (1922-1992)” will be on display at the Municipal Museum of Faro until April 30, 2023, and can be visited from Tuesday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10:30 am to 17:00 pm.
