The students of Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School (ESMTG) who created a petition for the creation of the National Garden Day, which was recently unanimously approved by the Assembly of the Republic, were received by Isilda Gomes, president of Portimão City Council, in the past October 21st.
The resolution resulted from a project developed by young students and will be implemented from the 25th of May, the birth date of the architect Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, to whom «the country owes a lot in terms of innovative ideas, reference environmental works and good practices. inspirational" as stated in the petition.
At the reception for students and teachers, Isilda Gomes highlighted that “it is a pride for the city to have young citizens who think in this way, because thinking about the environment is fundamental, and defending the gardens and green areas in our territory is half the battle to that climate change does not accelerate so much'.
The mayor also highlighted the fact that, “for the first time, a class from a school created and promoted a national petition unanimously approved by the Assembly of the Republic, which means an added value for all of us”.

Isilda Gomes assumed, before handing over to those responsible for ESMTG an evocative reminder of the creation of the National Garden Day, that this measure «brings us with increased responsibility, especially in the implementation of more green zones».
Representing the distinguished class, philosophy professor Carlos Café thanked him, admitting that National Garden Day «is the outcome of an adventure that began more than two years ago, interrupted by the pandemic, and only the trust placed by all those involved allowed this to happen. result, of an extraordinary dimension".
According to the teacher, the participating classes received an invitation to attend a session of the Assembly of the Republic, for which Isilda Gomes offered to provide transportation from the municipality.
Also present at the reception, Rui Alexandre Vassalo de Figueiredo, director of the Agrupamento de Escolas Manuel Teixeira Gomes, said that it was «the fair recognition of the work developed by students and teachers and that will mark their memory, as we are not closed in a classroom in this process of forming responsible citizens".
