Túlio, Terrapin, Thankful, Tintin, Teteia, Thunder and Tolstoy are the names of the seven tortoises that, after having been recovering in Porto d'Abrigo do Zoomarine, will receive “medical discharge” tomorrow, October 19, and will return to the middle wild, on one of the banks of the Odeleite dam.

Their origins are different, as are the sizes, weights and reasons of the seven rescues and inherent care and/or rehabilitation processes – but, in common, they have their conservation status (inseparable from the species). leper Mauremys, Mediterranean tortoise), the passage (shorter or longer) through Porto d'Abrigo do Zoomarine and, of course, the need to integrate breeding groups, or not be members of an endangered species.

This collective return, given the dramatic reductions in water bodies in the Algarve landscape, will take place this Wednesday morning, on one of the banks of the Odeleite Dam, based on a repeated cooperation between Zoomarine and ICNF – Instituto da Conservação da Natureza. and das Florestas, the entity that oversees the national audacity network, of which Zoomarine has been a part, as a co-founding member, for precisely 25 years.

Unlike Salina, the sea turtle that has been walking for three months to travel the Mediterranean Sea, the progression of these seven tortoises cannot be remotely monitored.

However, the largest of these magnificent seven will carry a microchip that may, one day, allow them to understand how they grew up and, eventually, what other destinations they will have chosen.

Until then, in Porto d'Abrigo there are a few more tortoises whose rehabilitation process cannot be concluded yet and will continue there until the arrival of the spring heat.
