The first section of the third circular of Faro, which includes the requalification of Avenida 25 de Abril and the creation of a new roundabout next to Estrada da Penha, was inaugurated this Friday, October 28, at a cost of around 1 million euros.

Due to its location, next to the Penha campus, the roundabout was named “Universidade do Algarve”.

This is one of the sections of the total contract for the 3rd ring road, which will connect the athletics track roundabout to Pontes de Marchil, at the entrance to Faro, which has a total estimated cost of 16 million euros, is 3,2 kilometers long and should be completed within the next five years.

«In the Marchil Roundabout, the execution project is also completed, we just need the opinion of an entity. We would like, in the coming years, to have a tender for the execution of this work", stressed Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Municipality of Faro, during the inauguration of the first section of this project.

«It is a work that will give a new mobility capacity to the entire city and will allow, in the future, to reach the roundabout north of the athletics track without entering the city. Or until we use this same route to enter the city in the best possible way”, he continued.

Regarding the Marchil Roundabout section, the intervention area is 8.300 square meters, the estimated cost is 2,3 million euros and the execution forecast is set for 2023/2024.

The intervention in the section of Sítio da Má Vontade and Pontes de Marchil will have a length of just over a kilometer, the estimated cost is 4 million euros and the execution forecast is pointed to 3/2025. Here, one of the sections will be carried out on rustic soil and the other on urban soil. 'The acquisition of land will be carried out within the scope of the execution units through the assignment of re-parcelling operations'.

On Avenida Mário Lyster Franco, the section to be carried out will be 530 meters long, the project will cost around 2,3 million, and should be ready in 2023/2024.

Finally, the section of the Penha Urbanization Plan, with an extension of 650 meters, has an estimated cost of 3 million and is expected to be completed in 2025/2026.

To journalists, Rogério Bacalhau stressed that the expansion of the city of Faro it is currently only possible to go north, and that is what is being done.

«28 years ago, in 1994, when I opened Pinheiro e Rosa, the school was on the outskirts of the city, there wasn't even a tarred road. But the city has grown and today it can only grow to the north and we, in some way, are helping this growth with the construction of this 3rd circular that will organize everything next to it and create accessibility», stressed the mayor of Faro. .

«Another five years and, probably, we will be able to have the 3rd Circular finished, which will be very positive for the mobility of the municipality, for those who need to enter or leave the city and, above all, for those who come to live and to the activities that will be established in this area», he continued.

As for the «100 irregular parking spaces» that the requalification of Avenida 25 de Abril eliminated, Rogério Bacalhau says he is aware of the complaints, but stresses that «we cannot fail to dynamize the city because of this».

«There are always other parking options, they are not so close to home», he admitted. Even so, with this requalification, the Avenue in question now has, according to the mayor, 26 more “regular” parking spaces.
