Praia da Rocha waves can now be seen live around the world

A partnership between the Municipality of Portimão and the Manuel Teixeira Gomes School Group

The project “Live Waves from Praia da Rocha”, which consists of the direct transmission by streaming of waves and the sea, from a webcam located outside the Municipal Sports Support Center of Praia da Rocha, is already in action and has been presented to the public on the 6th of October. 

The project, born of a partnership between the Municipality of Portimão and the Agrupamento de Escolas Manuel Teixeira Gomes (AEMTG), was conceived and executed by a team formed by the teachers of the geography group and by a computer teacher, with the aim of providing video images in real time to the community linked to water sports and to the citizens of Portimão, tourists and visitors, in a continuous transmission.

During the presentation, Francisco Pereira, project coordinator, explained that the objective is “to open a kind of 'video window' for the waves of Praia da Rocha, which includes the jetty, with many of the activities promoted by the sports schools taking place on this sea front. of sea, mainly linked to surfing and bodyboarding, who will enjoy these images».

«But other types of nautical sports and recreation will also be able to gather information about the sea, waves and wind conditions, in addition to beach tourism», stated Francisco Pereira, highlighting the «more educational or curricular aspect about ports, the dynamics of erosion, the accumulation of coastal sands or activities linked to the economy of the sea, of which beach tourism is just one of them».

 

 

The location of a webcam in the municipal sports area of ​​Praia da Rocha «would always be the best location for excellent proximity and better framing, with a computer server, energy, communications and an application for accessing images, which only works on smartphones. », clarified the teacher.

Councilor Teresa Mendes, responsible for Education, also highlighted the commitment of the teachers involved in the project and the relevance of the webcam, "which will serve the local community and everyone who, anywhere in the world and throughout the year, wish to view this area of ​​Praia da Rocha».

Following this public presentation, two AEMTG high school classes had the opportunity to experience various nautical activities, such as surfing, bodyboarding and stand up paddle in collaboration with Portimão Surf Clube, in addition to other modalities such as beach tennis, beach and beach volleyball.
