Festival Contos de Liberdade returns to Tavira, Faro and São Brás de Alportel

Festival designed and programmed to bring school audiences closer to oral narration

The Festival Contos de Liberdade, dedicated to oral narration, is back in Tavira, Faro and São Brás de Alportel, from the 19th to the 21st of October.

During these three days, narrators, musicians and stories for all ages will perform in schools, bars and libraries.

O Festival Tales of Liberty is organized by ARCA – Regional and Cultural Association of the Algarve, in partnership with Associação Rock da Baixamar. This is the 21st edition of the Festival, which, «throughout all its editions, has created moments of sharing, listening and reflection through stories and artists from around the world».

This year's edition of the Festival Contos de Liberdade, which will feature the participation of national and international narrators, was designed and programmed to bring school audiences closer to oral narration. Thus, the festival will take storytellers and musicians to school groups in the Algarve councils of Tavira, Faro and São Brás de Alportel.

On the 19th of October, the Tales of Liberty start their journey through the schools, with storytelling sessions for students from schools in the municipality of Tavira.

On the 20th of October, after a visit to the Pinheiro e Rosa School Group, in Faro, during the morning, where the narrator Luís Correia Carmelo will give short story sessions and Fernando Guerreiro will give a presentation of the poetry show GUME, at 21:00, it will take place at the Maktostas bar, in the heart of the city of Faro, the presentation of the book «Bendito eloudo, conto contado», a collection of tales from the Portuguese oral tradition, organized by Benita Prieto and illustrated by Sofia Paulino.

This book has the participation of 14 Portuguese storytellers who were invited to put on paper some of the traditional tales that are part of their repertoire.

Benita Prieto, editing coordinator, Paulo Correia, specialist in oral narration and author of the preface, as well as Fernando Guerreiro and Luís Correia Carmelo, both authors of two of the stories in the book will be present at the book's presentation.

The festival ends on the 21st, with a visit by storytellers to schools belonging to the José Belchior Viegas School Group, in São Brás de Alportel. At 21:30, at the Municipal Library Dr. Manuel Francisco do Estanco Louro, a short story session will be held by Benita Prieto and Fernando Guerreiro.

According to Fernando Guerreiro, president of ARCA, “it is with great joy that we are once again launching the Festival Contos de Liberdade. These last two years have been one of distancing and, for that very reason, we want to bring many stories and ways of telling so that we can get closer again”.

O Festival Tales of Liberty has the support of the Regional Directorate for Culture of the Algarve, within the scope of the Support Program for Culture 2022, a financial support granted to cultural agents in the Algarve, which aims to correct asymmetries in access to cultural enjoyment.
