Espaço Saúde 360º Algarve promotes information on influenza vaccination in the elderly in Cachopo

The initiative is free and open to the general public

“Saúde em Dia: Influenza in the elderly – vaccinate to protect” is the theme of the next informative session promoted by Espaço Saúde 360º Algarve, in partnership with the University of Algarve and the Project Recreate in Community – Intergenerational and Community Space, in Cachopo, in Tavira.

The session will take place on November 3rd, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, at the Intergenerational and Community Space (former day center of the Parish of Cachopo).

The initiative aims to alert to the importance of vaccination in the elderly and in people considered at high risk of developing complications after influenza, being responsible for numerous episodes of urgency and hospitalization.

Some factors to consider will also be addressed, namely, when the vaccination should be carried out, who should be vaccinated, how the call for the vaccine is made, which people are covered by the free vaccination, how to act when side effects occur, as well as tips and tricks. ways to implement preventive flu habits.

“This session aims to raise awareness of this problem that is so present in our country, where the aging of the population is significant, at the same time as it intends to promote health literacy and encourage the change to preventive habits, in order to raise awareness and preserve the health of citizens”, says Ricardo Valente Santos, psychologist and manager of the Espaço Saúde 360º Algarve project.

“This type of initiatives open to the public allows us to reach an older population with less access to credible and updated health information, raising awareness of this issue. Prevention is, without a doubt, the watchword”, says Margarida Espírito Santo, pharmacist and professor at the University of Algarve, speaker of the session.

The session “Saúde em Dia: Influenza in the elderly – vaccinate to protect” is part of the “Saúde em Dia” initiative, a set of informative sessions that aim to clarify the Algarve population on important health issues, through simple and objective, which demystifies some misconceptions.

The initiative is free and open to the general public.

O 360º Algarve Health Area is a project promoted by Health in Dialogue Platform and funded by the Regional Operational Program – CRESC Algarve 2020 and by Portugal Inovação Social through European Union Funds, which runs until December 2022.

This initiative, inspired by the guidelines and objectives defined in the Health Literacy Action Plan 2019-2021 of the General Directorate of Health, is aligned with the principles of social and territorial cohesion and aims to promote health literacy in citizens over 65 years, low schooling and low income and at greater risk of isolation in several parishes in the Algarve.

This project aims to favor the behavioral determinants inherent to a healthy lifestyle, with a final assessment of the impact of the intervention on the quality of life and well-being of each user, through an integrated and citizen-centered approach based on partnerships and local collaborations, such as: municipalities, parishes, health units, IPSS, patient associations, and other public and private entities in the social and health area.
