Children learned at Quinta do Peral the importance of bees in biodiversity

The children also had the opportunity to make candles from beeswax slabs.

15 children participated, on the 15th of October, in an activity, at the Center for Environmental Education and Interpretation of the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel – Quinta do Peral, to raise awareness of the importance of bees in biodiversity.

This initiative had the participation of eight children from Refúgio Aboim Ascensão.

«The action promoted by the municipality was part of the SEIVA 2022 Program, Education Week and Environmental Volunteering Initiatives and had the collaboration of Rosário Silva who presented the Apis mellifera, the bee that produces the honey we eat, referring to its importance for the maintenance of biodiversity, namely for having foods such as peaches, oranges, almonds or blueberries, among many others», says the São Brás de Alportel Chamber. .

Experiencing being a beekeeper, getting to know the world that fits in a beehive and understanding how a frame with stored honey works and also getting to know workers, drones and creation «wondered the young participants, who also had the opportunity to put their hands on the glass of the box where the painting was, to understand the temperature difference between the area where the honey is stored, which is colder, and the area where the creation is, which is warmer», he adds.

The children also had the opportunity to produce candles, from beeswax plates that beekeepers place on the boards, with the aim of making the bees build, on top of them, the opercula.

This meeting ended with a tasting of strawberry and rosemary honey.

SEIVA 2022 is an initiative promoted by the Portuguese Environment Agency, through the Algarve Hydrographic Region Administration (ARH), within the scope of the “Environmental Volunteering for Water” project, in which the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel is a partner, as a way to celebrate the beginning of the hydrological year and the National Water Day.
