Anniversary of the Convention Faro will be marked in 2023 with an international conference

Council of Europe Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society was signed in Faro to October 27, 2005

A conference with national and international experts will take place in October 2023, in the Algarve capital, to celebrate yet another anniversary of the Convention of Faro, announced the Farense City Council.

The international conference will discuss the models and practices of community involvement in the management of Cultural Heritage, and their impact on the implementation of sustainable urban development models.

The Council of Europe Framework Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society, signed in Faro on 27 October 2005, underlines the importance of cultural heritage as an integral part of human rights and democracy.

«Despite being 17 years old, the Convention’s relevance is unquestionable, marking a turning point in heritage thinking and practice in understanding cultural heritage as a matter that belongs to everyone and for everyone, which must be everyone’s responsibility and where everyone have the right to participate", stresses the Chamber of Faro.

Counting, to date, with six signatures and 21 ratifications by European countries, this document defines Cultural Heritage as a dynamic element of an open citizenship, in which various belongings intersect and where heritage, memory and creation meet, providing for a culture of peace and respect for difference where cultural heritage plays the role of agglutinator and factor of approximation, understanding and dialogue, bringing to the discussion issues that are important to be debated and explored.

«It is with this in mind that the Municipality assumes the importance of this Convention, whose name is attributed by our city, carrying out a vast program of initiatives in collaboration with the UNESCO Chair of the University of Delft and the University of Algarve».

The memoranda of understanding to that effect were signed at the international event Faro Convention Warm-Up, held on October 27, 2021 at Lethes Theater, which brought together experts and doctoral candidates from more than a dozen countries.

In this context, emphasis is also given to the Faro Convention Labs, where a dozen students from the Masters in Architecture at the Technological University of Delft developed, in April and May, various initiatives with the people of Faro and their visitors, inviting them to discuss the city's heritage values, which will result in better knowledge for its management.
