Albufeira: Down Syndrome World Championship ends with prize giving

Championship took place between 17 and 22 October

The 10th Down Syndrome World Championship, which took place in Albufeira between the 17th and 22nd of October, had the official closing dinner last Saturday, a ceremony where the prizes for the best swimmers and best selections of this edition were awarded. year.

Camino Martinez (W21 women) and Vicente Pereira (W21 men) were the best swimmers in this Championship, while in the “Mosaics” section, Jagoda Litner and Caique Aimore were the best classified, in the women's and men's category. The best teams were those from Great Britain, Mexico and Italy.

During the dinner, prizes and recognition plaques were also handed out. Rui Sardinha and Miguel Miranda, vice-presidents of the Portuguese Swimming Federation, deliver the plaques of thanks to José Carlos Rolo, president of the Albufeira City Council, and Cristiano Cabrita, vice-president, as well as Barbara Higgins, of the International Organization for Down Syndrome (DSISO), Mário Ferreira (CEO of NAU Hotels), Carla Cardoso (ANDDI representative) and José Perdigão (President of Analgarve).

The mayors José Carlos Rolo and Cristiano Cabrita, in turn, delivered souvenirs to the 23 delegations present and Lizzie Vogel, president of DSISO, awarded a plaque of recognition to the Albufeira City Council.

At this ceremony, thanks were also given to the technical directors of this World Championship, namely Lolli Montico, Carla Cardoso and Mariett Matias, as well as Sónia Demétrio, from FC Ferreiras and Nelson Pereira from Sport TV, for the «commitment, support and collaboration they showed before and during the event and which contributed so much to its success», said Miguel Miranda.

José Carlos Rolo also stressed that «Albufeira is eminently a municipality of inclusion, support and equal opportunities».

«The holding of the DSISO World Championship in Albufeira with our financial, logistical and communicational support, confirms us as a destination of excellence for major international sporting events», he said.

The mayor also thanked FC das Ferreiras and all the volunteers and groups that promoted the event. In turn, Cristiano Cabrita, vice-president and councilor for Youth and Sports, did not hide his satisfaction at the realization of this Championship in Albufeira and even said that, due to its intrinsic characteristics, where all athletes “are great examples of human overcoming” , this was the sporting event that most touched him this year.

«The Down Syndrome Swimming World Championship is, undoubtedly, the affirmation of Albufeira as an important national sports actor. It is for this and other reasons that we want to be the European City of Sport 2026. This is the path for our county”, he concluded.
