Loulé marks European Car-Free Day with sport and environmental awareness

This Thursday, September 22

The European Car-Free Day takes place this Thursday, September 22, and Loulé will join the celebration by closing Praça da República, an artery that runs between Largo Bernardo Lopes and Largo Gago Coutinho, to traffic, from 15:00 to 23:00.

The day represents the culmination of the European Mobility Week, which has been taking place since the 16th, and this year, Loulé has once again promoted more sustainable mobility through Parking Day, which returns to the heart of the city to show citizens the importance of this matter.

At the time when traffic will be cut off, there will be an animation and awareness program on site. At 19:00 pm, there will be a Hip-Pop performance presented by the Urban Xpression group, while at the same time there will be a free fitness class, open to the general public, promoted by the MOOV Gym.

At 20:00 pm, the Metrominute Walk begins, which will have a route of about 7 kilometers through the city, whose registration can be carried out on site from 19:30 pm.

The event will also feature extended hours for local shops, health screenings promoted by Hospital de Loulé, the screening of 360º Films on climate change and the participation of exhibitors dedicated to this matter and street entertainment.

Praça da República, in Loulé, has been closed to car traffic on weekends, since Friday, September 2nd, a measure that, according to the municipality, aims to improve public space, smooth mobility and promote local market.

The European Mobility Week is a time when citizens across Europe have the opportunity to take advantage of more targeted activities dedicated to sustainable mobility, with the aim of facilitating a broad debate on the need to change behavior in relation to mobility, in particular with regard to the use of the private car.

«The theme “Better Connections” encourages us to reflect on the advantages of using public transport. Cities that promote this mode of transport are at an advantage, remembering that the Loulé City Council approved the exemption from paying for Urban Transport in the Municipality of Loulé. Thus, the circuits managed by the municipal company LC Global in Loulé, Quarteira, Vilamoura and Almancil, as well as the connection between these locations and the Loulé/Praia de Quarteira railway station, are free to use for all lanes. age groups, no ticket or card validation is required», concludes the municipality in a note.
