Ilha de Tavira bets on environmental protection with new ashtrays

“Biataki” ashtrays can be found along the main beach access walkway

Ilha de Tavira receives the first “Biataki” ashtrays, which can now be found along the main walkway leading to the beach.

This is an environmental action that, according to the municipality, aims to «create conditions for placing cigarette butts, as well as encouraging the adoption of behaviors to prevent the environment, in a circular economy perspective».

All the butts placed in these ashtrays will be sent to the Biataki network, within the scope of the BiataCircula research project, which aims to decontaminate and revalue the butts, through the cultivation of mushrooms (Oyster mycelium), which will translate into “eco-bricks”. ” waterproof, fire resistant and low weight, in a circular economy perspective and waste recovery.

In a note, the municipality emphasizes that it is expected that the fishing support of the various parishes will also be covered with these ashtrays and that it is intended to extend, in the next bathing season, this network to the other beaches in the municipality.
