Medieval Days had «the greatest turnout in memory»

Medieval Days were an eco-event

The Medieval Days, which ended on the 28th of August, in Castro Marim, had the “greatest turnout in memory”.

From the 24th to the 28th, there were five days and five nights of a full house.

«Thousands of people walked the streets and alleys enchanted and animated by more than 30 animation groups, national and international, and about 100 exhibitions a day, which were happening throughout the event venue», says the Chamber of Castro Marim.

In the medieval market, there were dozens of exhibitors with products and gastronomic experiences. But it was in the Castle that this medieval journey took place with greater realism. This being the most loyal scenario possible to the Middle Ages, it was there that the main cultural and artistic productions took place, such as medieval horseback tournaments and the recreation of more than 45 professions of the time.

The Castromarinense municipality highlights “the participation of young artisans from the municipality, who have promoted and reinvented old crafts, in a continuous work of valorization of the intangible cultural heritage of the territory”.

The well-known exhibition of instruments of torture and punishment, in Paiol do Castelo, continued to be one of the main attractions of the event, showing the most barbaric side of the time.

In addition to the animation groups, with jugglers, togglers, fire-breathers, bagpipers, tightrope walkers, swordsmen and contortionists, the Castro Marim Chamber thanks «the hundreds of extras who, with their creativity, enrich this event with each edition».

The Historical Recreation in the Fort of S. Sebastião was another of the stages of this event, occupied by the Associação Companhia Livre, the “Military Garrison Century XVII – The Restoration”, with thematic exhibitions and fencing and horse riding demonstrations.

The Municipality of Castro Marim highlights “the excellent collaboration of local associations, which explored the car parks and taverns in the castle and in the medieval market, with menus full of seasonal delicacies, raising important funds for their annual activities. With equal distinction, the competition of participating establishments, with more and more participants and more involved, in this challenge launched by the municipality as a stimulus to the participation and involvement of the community in the event».

The municipality "decided to go ahead with the event in March, which resulted in an organization sustained in many efforts, from employees, directors, associations, companies, Castromarines and visitors", underlines the vice-president Filomena Sintra.

The Medieval Days of Castro Marim were organized by the Municipality of Castro Marim, in partnership with the Local Associations and the institutional support of the Algarve Tourism Region, Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, Tavira Gran-Plaza, Municipality of Guérande and Municipality of Blain .
