Ecologist Party Os Verdes in the districts of Évora, Beja and Faro

Campaign will pass through Beja, Mora, Vendas Novas, Odemira, Monchique and Lagos

The Ecologist Party Os Verdes (PEV), which in the most recent Legislative Elections ceased to have parliamentary representation, will be, from the 12th to the 16th of July, in the districts of Évora, Beja and Faro, within the scope of its National Campaign SOS Nature.

It is a roadmap through the south of the country, promoting concrete actions with populations, entities, associations, involving the collectives of the ENP and the elected representatives of the Greens.

According to the PEV, «the National Campaign SOS Nature, which is touring the country until the end of the year, when Os Verdes complete 40 years of struggles for the Environment and Nature, intends to denounce the accelerated decline of biodiversity, the degradation of habitats and to successive environmental attacks on our territory'.

The party adds that “there are many and diversified initiatives planned, in which the collection of signatures in a postcard addressed to the Prime Minister is highlighted, demanding that he stop destructive projects of habitats and biodiversity, such as lithium exploration, the super intensive cultivation of olive groves or almond trees, among others, intensive greenhouses, construction on the coastline, the destruction of the native forest, which reverses the ongoing municipalization of protected areas, and that measures are taken to mitigate the effects of the drought, remembering that it is urgent to promote the restoration of ecosystems'.

Another postcard should also be highlighted, which «will be addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations to pressure the Government of Portugal to guarantee the unconditional protection and defense of Nature».

The SOS Nature campaign will mark, «with black flags, 40 black dots that have affected Nature, remembering or denouncing them, because unfortunately we continue to witness serious and uncontrollable attacks on biodiversity».

This route will pass through the districts of Évora, Beja and Faro where "themes as diverse as intensive cultures, animal welfare, public transport, the drought situation, the coastline, public water, archaeological heritage, forest, among many others that are interconnected and cannot be dissociated'.

«SOS Natureza intends to give visibility to the local reality, felt by the populations and addressed in the various national and international reports that mention that the loss of biodiversity is a worrying factor that causes ecological imbalances, with profound impacts on our lives, such as changes in conditions necessary for the practice of healthy agriculture, the decreasing availability of agricultural varieties, or the emergence of pests, diseases or uncontrolled pandemics, always bearing in mind the need to mitigate Climate Change», add Os Verdes.

Many factors, «such as intensive agriculture and the consequent excessive use of agrochemicals, the destruction of habitats, deforestation, the urbanization of many areas and climate change, are pointed out as the main causes of destruction of biological diversity», also underlines the PEV

In Portugal, «in addition to the degradation of protected areas, due to the lack of human, material and financial resources and also due to the lack of a cohesive and integrated strategy for nature conservation, intensified by a recurring duality of interests between private construction and natural values ».

Therefore, the ENP concludes, “it is urgent to fight for the defense of the environment, for the preservation and conservation of nature, for the right to live in an environmentally safe and balanced country”.
