Navy inactivated mortar grenade in Meia Praia

Alert was given by a popular

A mortar grenade was inactivated this Sunday at Meia Praia, in Lagos, around 12:00 pm, by members of the Portuguese Navy's Explosive Device Inactivation Readiness Team (EOD).

«The alert was given by a popular person to the Maritime Police, who immediately requested the support of an EOD Team to the Navy. Upon arrival at the site, the EOD Team carried out reconnaissance and analysis procedures on the device, having concluded that it was a mortar shell. The device was inactivated on the spot», described the Navy.

Three soldiers from the Explosive Devices Inactivation Readiness Team, which belongs to the Detachment of Sapadores Divers No. 1, were present at the scene, along with two Maritime Police Officers and two Amarok vehicles with five soldiers.

«We are aware of the danger inherent to this type of devices that are sometimes found on our coast, normally with a high degree of corrosion, so any sighting should always be reported to the National Maritime Authority and treated as a real explosive device and dangerous and should not be handled or moved», warned the Navy.
