Castro Verde celebrates the 883rd anniversary of the Battle of Ourique

Commemorations are organized by the Municipality of Castro Verde in partnership with the Portuguese Army

Castro Verde celebrates, next Monday, July 25th, the 883rd Anniversary of the Battle of Ourique, «a decisive moment that, on this day, in the year 1139, in our county, determined the consecration of Afonso Henriques as the first king of Portugal".

According to the Municipality of this town in Baixo Alentejo, it is «a historic date for the county, one of great pride and affirmation of our identity, which will be honored and valued».

The program of celebrations begins with a tribute by the Municipality of Castro Verde to the Portuguese Army, in Jardim do Padrão, in Castro Verde, at 9:00 am, followed by a Campal Mass, from 10:00 am, next to the Royal Basilica, and which will be presided over by the Bishop of the Armed Forces D. Rui Valério.

After this moment, at 11:30 am, the Pilgrimage to the Monument to the Battle of Ourique begins, at the site of São Pedro das Cabeças, where the Military Evocative Ceremony takes place, with the raising of the national flag, the laying of flowers next to the monument evocative and homage to the dead in the Battle.
