Gomes Cravinho: Maritime connection between Morocco and the Algarve is «a priority»

There is "agreement on the desirability of the connection" between Portugal and Morocco

The maritime connection between Tangier and the Algarve is «a priority» and will be «one of the major themes» of a summit between Portugal and Morocco that should «take place later this year», announced João Gomes Cravinho, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

On the fringes of Inauguration of the Islamic Baths and Barretos Manor House, the official realized that Portugal and Morocco «continue to agree on the desirability of the link» and that «in the coming months» there may be decisive advances in the process.

“It's a priority. It's not the only one, but it's one of them," she added.

“Of course, there are a number of factors here that have to be taken into account. The creation of a new maritime border has to be worked out with the Ministry of Internal Administration», said Gomes Cravinho.

On the other hand, «maritime connections are provided by private agents and it is necessary to involve them in the discussion».

Regarding the location, in the Algarve, which will be chosen to be one of the poles of this connection, it is still to be decided - in the connection that existed in the past, but ended up being interrupted, Tangier was connected with Faro.

«We have been talking about Portimão, but there are several possibilities. In this matter, private operators will also give their opinion», concluded the minister.
