Cycling: Algarve's Daniela Campos becomes national time trial champion

Rafael Reis, from Glassdrive-Q8-Anicolor, was also national champion

The Algarve's Daniela Campos, from Bizkaia-Durango, and Rafael Reis, from Glassdrive-Q8-Anicolor, were crowned this Friday, June 24, national time trial champions in the elite elite category, at the start of the National Road Championships , which take place in Mogadouro, until Sunday, 26.

Among the female elite, Daniela Campos was the strongest, revalidating the national time trial title. The young Algarvean completed the course in 32m35s (average of 39,591 km/h), beating teammate Beatriz Pereira by just seven seconds. The third place, 12 seconds away from the winner, was Ana Caramelo (Kiwi Atlantico Louriña).

“It is a very good feeling to be able to retain the title and I am very happy about it. I knew I had a chance to make it, but we have very strong athletes in this area. I had to believe in my abilities and focus on what I could do and it went well. It was a good course for me, it wasn't very technical, but we had to pay attention to the wind, which somehow made the athletes' work difficult. The secret to victory was really managing the effort during the race», explained Daniela Campos, who covered a 21,5 kilometer course.

The elite male runners tackled a 33,6 kilometer course.

Rafael Reis won the race, stopping the clock at 40m23s, having cycled at a dizzying average of 49,922 km/h. The runner-up was Ivo Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates), who was 29 seconds away from regaining a title that had already
belonged in 2020. João Almeida, champion last year, closed the podium, 41 seconds away from the winner.

“Honestly, I wasn't even expecting the win. I had Covid-19 three weeks ago and the sensations in the last races had not been good. I started training and I also felt a lot of instability, with better days and worse days. Yesterday I saw the course of this time trial and I liked it, as it favored heavier cyclists, like me. I tried to manage the competition better and got the victory, which was something I had been looking for for several years. I had high quality opponents, I did my best and managed to surprise myself”, admitted the cyclist.

The men's under-23s also completed 21,5 kilometers, with Pedro Andrade (Efapel Cycling) snatching the title from teammate Fábio Fernandes.

The Feirense cyclist spent 27m10s (average of 47,485 km/h), leaving in the immediate positions Daniel Dias (Kelly-Simoldes-UDO), at 17 seconds, and Pedro Silva (Glassdrive-Q8-Anicolor), at 36 seconds.

The women's race also had the presence of the masters. Among the youngest of the veterans, the master 30 Nádia Mendes (Cantanhede Cycling/Vesam) prevailed, with 35m08s. The best master 40 was Raquel Santos (CE Gonçalves/Azeitonense), with 36m07s. The winner in masters 50 was Filomena Gomes (Vertentability/CRG), with 36m01s.
