The Câmara de Loulé plans to reopen Café Calcinha by the end of this year, to give a «new breath» to the emblematic space of the city.

Closed a few months ago, Calcinha is undergoing rehabilitation works, namely to combat infiltrations in the building.

Reopened in July 2017 – also after works -, the café has been closed for about a year. The concession, admits the mayor Vítor Aleixo to the Sul Informação, «did not go well due to several factors, such as the pandemic».

The future of Café Calcinha was under debate at the last Municipal Assembly of Loulé, which approved the opening of a new tender for a new concession.

«We will wait for the proposals and the jury will select the best one», considered the mayor.

The goal is for Calcinha to be «a different café, which exalts the values of conviviality, conversation between people, reading and gatherings», he explained. This is a space «laden with tradition and memory, something very important for the constitution of an adult and well-formed human being», he said.

As for the works, they are taking place “at the level of the structures to prevent infiltration and degradation of the building”.

Calcinha is part of the Route of Cafés with History of Portugal. The space was frequented by the poet António Aleixo and his figure is perpetuated at the door of Calcinha, in a statue in his memory.

That space was classified as a Building of Municipal Interest in 2012 and, in 2014, acquired by the municipality.
