«Vamos à Vila» invites you to discover the heritage of Monchique and its “villages”

Valuing the heritage, traditions, flavors and local knowledge is the main objective

Monchique is a village, but for two days it will have seven villages. It will be on the weekend of the 28th and 29th of May, the date set for the first edition of the new event «Vamos à Vila».

If before it was the villagers of the municipality who “went to the village”, to take care of the most diverse tasks, this time seven villages will be scattered throughout the streets of Monchique, closed to traffic during these two days, to take visitors to tour the entire town and discover its corners, but also the local «knowledge and flavours».

Throughout the weekend, there will be, in each of these villages, various offers ranging from more or less traditional gastronomy and music, to handicrafts and local products, to themed tours and walks, traditional games, conversations and storytelling circles, various exhibitions, knitting, crochet and sewing workshops or paper with orange peel, or even the creation of pigments from natural products, artistic interventions, gatherings.

Each of these villages will be in charge of villagers, all well-known figures in the village. Among these villagers Special mentions include Father Pedro, born in Monchique but parish priest of Ferreiras and Boliqueime, Idalete Marques, radio host for Rádio Fóia, Eduardo Duarte, geographer and writer, or Alice Duarte, dancer and performer.

One of the highlights will be, on the 29th, at 18:00, the recital “Sopro de vida”, Rão Kyao, at the Igreja Matriz.

The Câmara de Monchique, which organizes the new event in partnership with people and local entities, explains that “Vamos à vila” aims to be “a moment of celebration of local traditions. A tribute to what has gone and what is intended to be kept as a tradition. An event with veracity and essence».

The municipality adds that “the voice and traditions of a community were the creative thread for this project, where the particularities of our municipality and our territory allowed the whole idea to be developed. Traditions were, therefore, at the base of creation. We are inspired by the past, safeguarding the collective and individual memory».

«We want to highlight the genuineness associated with local products and let it speak for itself and highlight rural experiences, so that they result in an affective archive, to keep and preserve», says the Municipality.

Paulo Alves: This is an event to «bring people to explore the corners of Monchique»

Paulo Alves, mayor of Monchique, in statements to the Sul Informação, explained that “it was usual for the Municipality to promote some events – Feira dos Enchidos, do Ham, Festival do Medronho or das Camélias – that the pandemic came to interrupt”. This year, it has not yet been possible to reorganize these initiatives on the usual dates, but «we wanted to promote this face-to-face event that would bring people to Monchique, but inside the village, to make them explore the corners».

And that's how, «using an expression very rooted among the people here», «Vamos à Vila» was born.

The objective is to «highlight all that we have that is good – sausages, medronho, honey, sweets – in an outdoor event». Traditional Monchique commerce will also be involved, as it will be open during the «Vamos à Vila» hours, as well as the churches and the Museum of Sacred Art.

As for the future of the new event, which President Paulo Alves hopes will be «very successful», the idea is «to see how this first edition goes». «It could be an idea to continue, because at this time of year, in the transition between spring and summer there is not much on offer in the Algarve. Now there is no overlap of events that there is in the summer».
