Tavira hosted regional underwater robotics school meeting

Meeting took place on the 18th of May

As part of the project “ROV4ALL – Construction of underwater robots in a school context”, the regional school meeting took place on the 18th of May in the Municipal swimming pools of Tavira.

The meeting – organized by the Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira and the Experimental Station of Mollusciculture of Tavira (EEMT) and IPMA, with the support of the Municipality of Tavira – was attended by 50 schools from the areas covered by the project (Azores, Algarve, Madeira). and Lisbon).

From the Algarve region, 11 schools participated: Secondary School of Vila Real de Santo António, Basic School of the 2nd and 3rd Cycles Dr. João Lúcio, Secondary School Dr. Francisco Fernandes Lopes, Secondary School Dr. Jorge Augusto Correia, Dra Laura Ayres Secondary School, João de Deus Secondary School, José Belchior Viegas Secondary School, Poeta António Aleixo Secondary School, Tomás Cabreira Secondary School, Pinheiro e Rosa Secondary School and Almancil Group of Schools.

According to the Municipality of Tavira, in the last two academic years, more than two hundred students from the 9th to the 12th year of the Algarve region built small underwater robots from a kit developed for this purpose, encouraging the exploration of the oceans. through the practice of electronics and robotics.

ROV4ALL is an ocean literacy project that aims to «motivate and awaken students' interest in marine science and technologies through the construction of small ROVs (Remotely Operated Vechicle)», which allow «the study and exploration of the seabed and submerged structures and are used both in scientific research and in military, security and oil exploration operations'.

This project is financed by the Blue Fund of the Directorate-General for Maritime Policy, with ARDITI – Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology and Innovation as its promoter, and as partners the Instituto do Mar e da Atmosphere, the Observatório do Mar dos Açores , the Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira, the Institute for Qualification IP-RAM, the Institute of Systems and Robotics of Instituto Superior Técnico and the Instituto do Mar.
