Week on Invasive Species marked in Albufeira

Project is being carried out by the Albufeira School Group

As part of the Week on Invasive Species, the aspiring Algarvensis Geopark presented two lectures and a painting exhibition that will be on display at the Escola Básica and High School in Albufeira, from the 23rd to the 30th of May.

The lecture “Invasive Plants”, by Miguel Rodrigues, a biologist at the Centro de Ciência Viva do Algarve, was presented on the 16th of May, in the library of the Secondary School of Albufeira, and on the 20th, in the auditorium of the Basic and Secondary School of Albufeira, and addressed the risks and threats of invasive plants to the ecosystem and biodiversity in general, to people and the economy, among other topics.

Now, it is the turn of the painting exhibition by landscape architect Manuela Santos, entitled “Belas Silenciosas”, to be presented at the Escola Básica e Secundária de Albufeira, from the 23rd to the 30th of May.

According to the Municipality of Albufeira, the author considers that this exhibition contributes to “a simple, direct and effective way” of clarifying what the “invasive plants we have in our territory are, since many of us , enchanted by the beauty of these plants, we help their silent proliferation, without realizing the impacts that it has on biodiversity and the economy».

Miguel Rodrigues believes that «we all have and can contribute in some way to combat these silent invaders».

These actions are part of the activities of the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis, which the municipalities of Loulé, Silves and Albufeira are part of and are part of the “Semana das Artes e da Cidadania – Percursos de Cidadania”, organized by the Agrupamento de Escolas de Albufeira-Poente (in Albufeira Secondary School), as well as the “Invasive Project” which is being carried out by the Albufeira School Group (namely at the Albufeira Basic and Secondary School) within the scope of the Invasive Species Week 2022 (May 21st to 29th) ), promoted by the Portuguese Society of Ecology (SPECO).

The actions are also framed in the “Sustainable Development Goal no.15 – Protect Terrestrial Life”, which aims to implement measures to prevent the introduction and significantly reduce the impact of invasive alien species on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and to control or eradicate the species. priorities.
