First sea crossing in Polynesian canoe connects Arade to Olhão

The departure will be in the river Arade and the arrival in the Ria Formosa

Diogo “Pitoco”, founder of Taho'e Canoe Club (Lagoa), Caio Mathias, founding partner of Aukai Canoe Club  (Olhão), and Anderson “Fish”, multi-athlete and water sports communicator (Lisbon) will make this Sunday, the 22nd, a crossing in polynesian canoe between the Mexilhoeira da Carregação pier (Rio Arade, Lagoa) and the marina of Olhão.

This is the first crossing in Portugal's history using this type of Polynesian canoe and will connect the two Polynesian canoeing schools established in the Algarve region by sea.

With a scheduled departure from the Mexilhoeirinha pier, where the Club Castores do Arade, home of the Taho'e school, and arrival at the marina in Olhão, home of the Aukai school.

In a total journey of around 80 kilometers, the rowers will travel along the beaches with cliffs and caves on the Algarve coast, «where the most fantastic beaches in Portugal and Europe are located».

The “Taho'e – Aukai” crossing will take place on the “International Day of Biodiversity”. This year's theme is “Building a shared future for life”, and was chosen to continue the promotion and support of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, which will be adopted at the next United Nations Conference on Biodiversity.

«The crossing aims to take the opportunity to shed light on the topic, which in 2022 was proposed due to the importance of protecting and maintaining biodiversity on a global scale», explain the promoters.

With this objective, the departure will be in the Arade river and the arrival in the Ria Formosa.

In addition, «the crossing aims to “open the navigation route” between the partner Va'a bases, symbolizing the connection and the strengthening of ties, in addition to remembering and honoring the ancient traditions of Polynesian navigation, which, through crossings in canoes, interconnected the various islands throughout the Pacific Ocean».
