Portimão dedicates week to fighting food waste

There will be the inauguration of the requalification works of the Banco Alimentar warehouse, in Portimão

Portimão will dedicate, from the 2nd to the 8th of June, a Week to Combat Food Waste, with the right to inaugurate the requalification works of the Food Bank warehouse and a meeting, at TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão.

The initiative follows the implementation of the Municipal Day to Combat Food Waste and starts at 17 pm on June 00, with the celebrations of the 2th anniversary of the Portimão warehouse of Banco Alimentar do Algarve, located in the industrial area of ​​Coca Maravilhas .

In the presence of Isilda Gomes, Mayor of Portimão, the requalification works of the warehouse will be inaugurated and a commemorative plaque will be unveiled, with the delivery of a symbolic dish, in recognition of the support provided since 2012 by the Municipality to the Food Bank of the Algarve, which will receive day an electric vehicle intended for the transport of volunteers and technical team, whose acquisition was supported by the municipal government.

On the 3rd, there will be the meeting “Fighting Food Waste – good practices”, from 10 am to 00 pm, in the small auditorium of TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão.

Nuno Alves, president of Banco Alimentar do Algarve, Paula Policarpo, president and founder of Associação Zero Desperdício, Cristina Ferradeira, director of services at the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Services, Isabel Ratão, professor at the University of Algarve – Department of Engenharia Alimentar and Teresa Diogo, coordinator of Environment Distribution – Jerónimo Martins, moderated by Daniela Anastácio, volunteer at Banco Alimentar do Algarve.

Next, the theme “Food Waste in Portugal”, by Iva Pires, professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and author of the book “Food Waste”, and the theme “Unidos Contra o Waste”, by Francisco Mello e Castro, coordinator of the United Against Waste Movement, both through video participation.

The Portimão City Council also highlights the celebrations, on June 7th, of the Municipal Day to Combat Food Waste, which will take place at the Pedagogical Farm of Portimão with the presence of the president of the Food Bank of the Algarve and the president of the Portimão City Council.

The event's schedule starts at 9:30 am with a class on the “Exercício e Saúde” program with the participation of children from the Lar da Criança de Portimão and the elderly from the Senior Social Center of Aldeia das Sobreiras and the Senior Social Center of Portimão, taking place half an hour later, the workshop “Reusing food leftovers”, promoted by Associação In Loco, within the scope of the Social Innovation Project “O Prato Certo”, followed by a tasting, which will include the participation of some social solidarity institutions in Portimão.

Participation in this activity, which will also include João Bota, from TIPO – Teatro Infantil de Portimão, is open to the community and is free.

The first edition of the Week to Combat Food Waste also counts with the active participation of DUAL Portimão, which will carry out on the mornings of the 6th and 7th of June the awareness-raising action “Zero Waste Sandwiches”.

This activity, comprising the preparation and offering of sandwiches made using food, will take place at Escola Básica Eng.º Nuno Mergulhão (day 6) and at Escola Secundária da Bemposta (day 7).

Finally, on the 8th of June, the “DUAL Run – Solidarity Walk” takes place, starting at 10:00 am next to the old market lot in Portimão, with participants going through the riverside area of ​​the city towards the Portimão Marina.

Registrations are now open and must be made by e-mail to [email protected], in the amount of 1,50 euros for DUAL trainees and 2,50 euros for the remaining subscribers.

The amount raised with the registrations for this walk will be donated to the Portimão branch of Banco Alimentar do Algarve, in order to support the relevant community service that the institution has performed over the last decade.
