Odiana demystified prickly pear in the Land of May

“Interpyme” project joins Portugal and Spain

The Odiana association was present this weekend at the Terra de Maio fair, in Azinhal (Castro Marim), with one of the featured products being the Indian Fig.

The presentation of the producer – Herdade da Malhada – took place on the 28th of May, in the space for conferences and demonstrations of the Terra de Maio event and was initially attended by Catarina Cavaco, director of Odiana, who spoke about the activities, the participating producers and the benefits of this project that aims to promote SMEs in the agri-food sector and gastronomic tourism.

In a second moment, a presentation of prickly pear was made by the adherent producer Interpyme: Nelson Ventura, from Herdade da Malhada in Alcoutim [certified organic production].

«Here the prickly pear was demystified, from the fruit and pulp to be consumed fresh, dried fruit or in juice, the palm rich in nutrients, such as the dehydrated flower and used in infusions. In addition to these, and knowing that Figueira da India is a cactus, a demonstration of handling this product was also carried out», says Odiana.

This project also includes businesswomen who produce products such as salt and fleur de sel, almonds, fresh and dried figs, butter and energy bars, fresh goat cheese, ham and sausages, traditional sweets, jams, honey, citrus fruits, and those processed and made with the most authentic local products.

Moreover, Odiana, among other actions, is making available to the SMEs participating in the project a photographic portfolio, graphic services and financial advice.

The development of an internationalization strategy and a gastronomic curation service through the ambassador Head Rui Silvestre, Michelin Star of the Vistas Restaurant.

INTERPYME – Platform for the Internationalization of Small and Medium Enterprises in the Algarve and the Provinces of Cadiz and Huelva – is a cooperation initiative between the Algarve, Alentejo and Andalusia, Interreg VA Spain-Portugal 2014-2020 Program (POCTEP), and co-financed by the FEDER This project aims to promote opportunities in terms of financing, promotion and internationalization for SMEs in the agri-food sector and has the support of the Municipalities of Alcoutim, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António.
