Minister of Territorial Cohesion will be at the inauguration of the “Camino Marítimo de Santiago”

Cruise departure is scheduled for this Saturday, May 28

The first “Caminho Marítimo de Santiago”, in Portugal, will be inaugurated this Friday, May 27, by Ana Abrunhosa, minsists of Territorial Cohesion. 

The initiative promoted by Upstream Portugal and Fórum Oceano, with the advisory support of the National Association of Cruises (ANC), is about to be inaugurated and has, in total, about two dozen vessels, including the Caravela Vera Cruz , which over 17 days will cover 500 miles to Santiago de Compostela, in Spain.

Until this Friday, the 27th, the vessels that make up this maiden voyage will be in the port of Vila Real de Santo António, ready to receive visitors, from where they will depart later on the 28th of May, at 9:00 am.

This Friday there will also be a welcome session, during which travelers who will be part of this inaugural cruise will be received and a presentation of what is the new and first “Maritime Way of Santiago”, in Portugal.

The event will take place at the Clube Náutico de Vila Real de Santo António, at 19:30, with the intervention of José Apolinário, president of the Committee for Coordination and Regional Development (CCDR) of the Algarve, and Ana Abrunhosa, Minister of Territorial Cohesion.

This moment will also be marked by the symbolic stamp of the first credential of the Cathedral of Santiago and by the launch of the Inteiro Postal da República – a piece developed in partnership with CTT – Correios de Portugal.

On Saturday, the departure of the vessels is scheduled for 9:00 am and the concentration near the entrance to the marina with vessels from the local fleet.

After this moment, which brings together some invited sailboats, as well as several international vessels, the blessing of the participating vessels will be given by the diocese of the Algarve. Then, the inaugural cruise departs for the Vilamoura Nautical Station, where the participants will spend the night.

Joana Pratas, the first female sailor in Portugal and one of the ambassadors of this initiative, will also be present on this trip.
