Kindness at School is the theme of a project presented by Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura at ESEC-UAlg

Infecting children and work teams with positive feelings of belonging, trust, sharing and peer cooperation were some of the values addressed.

“Education for Peace: the recognition of kindness in an open and multicultural educational environment” is the name of the project of the Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura (CIV) that educators Maria da Luz Gago and Axelle Van Hauwaert, accompanied by Cidália Bicho, pedagogical director of the CIV, presented on the 18th of May, at the Higher School of Education and Communication (ESEC) of the University of Algarve.

The project, promoted in the CIV Kindergarten, is the result of an investigation that involved education professionals, children and parents from that school, having already been disclosed at the International Pedagogy Congress, which took place in Braga.

This sharing session was aimed at the 2nd year class of the degree in Basic Education, who attend the option “Inclusion and learning: educational responses to diversity”, taught by teacher Teresa Vitorino.

During the session, the theoretical contextualization, the methodological options and description of the study, as well as the results obtained, were addressed.

It is a project whose main objective is to educate for peace, in a multilingual context, and for which artistic activities, Philosophy classes for Children, Problem Solving, Music, classes of Portuguese and English and the Storytelling sessions played an important role, not only in exploring concepts, but also in transforming interactions between children and adults.

«The holistic exploration of this topic was transversal to the various areas of work and had a particular impact on the educational environment», explains the CIV.

During the session, the class was invited to participate in a Problem Solving activity (project born in the CIV in 2011), following the fundamental steps of Pólya.

This proposal aimed to show how, in an activity that appeals to mathematical reasoning, children mobilize skills such as interpretation, mathematical communication, creativity, group decision, the ability to express opinions and listen to the opinions of others, reconciling logic and systematization characteristics of Mathematics with the ability to work in groups.

The session ended with a moment of storytelling, with the aim of showing the importance of stories as a theme for working on values, in this particular case, with the objective of highlighting the individual motivation of future educators, based on the assumption that the Word awakens creativity and can invoke a passion for teaching.

Infecting children and work teams with positive feelings of belonging, trust, sharing and peer cooperation were some of the values addressed.

«The synergies between the two institutions, CIV and ESEC, are highlighted, a link that has been going on for a long time. The CIV regularly welcomes students who attend the Degree in Basic Education to carry out Fieldwork in the Initiation to Professional Practice III curricular unit, as well as foreign students who chose ESEC for the Erasmus Program», points out the International College of Vilamoura.
