Vila do Bispo honors soldiers killed in combat with ceremony and flowers

On Saturday

A tribute ceremony to the Vila-Bispensian military who died in the service of the country, to be held next to the Memorial to ex-combatants, and the laying of wreaths on graves in the cemeteries of Sagres, Barão de São Miguel and Budens are the chosen method. by the Vila do Bispo City Council to mark the Day of the Combatant, on Saturday, the 9th.

This action, organized by the City Council has the support of the Association of ex-combatants of Vila do Bispo, starts at 9:00 am, in Sagres, and ends in Jardim da Fonte, in Vila do Bispo.

On the 9th of April 1918, the Portuguese troops that formed the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps, in France, during the 1st World War, were plagued by the German offensive carried out at dawn, in what became known as the Battle of La Lys, or the Lys.

Since that date, the 9th of April has been commemorated as "Combatants' Day" and on it all Portuguese soldiers who have fallen in a situation of war are honored, with special emphasis on those who died in the course of the 1st World War, or War of France (1914 – 1918) and also the so-called War of Africa, or the Overseas War (1961 – 1974).
