Portimão encourages the protection of birds and dunes in the Ria do Alvor

“Protect Dunes, Protect Birds” is the initiative created to highlight the importance of dune systems and bird details

“Proteger Dunes, Protect Birds” is the name of the awareness-raising action that took place on the morning of the 6th of April, at the Alvor Community Center.

This action aims to highlight the importance of dune systems, which includes the protection of the advance of the sands and the sea, and the defense and support of the diversity of species of fauna and flora.

The initiative was created, together with the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests, the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds and the association “A Rocha”, due to the fact that the Ria de Alvor is classified under the Natura 2000 Network and constitutes a nesting site for two species of birds that build their nests on the sands of beaches and dunes: the chilreta (Sternula albifrons) and the interrupted-collar plover (Charadrius alexandrinus).

The natural values present in the Ria de Alvor, the importance and dynamics of the dune systems, details about nesting seabirds and the legal means of protecting this natural area were the topics covered.

In this awareness action, since the nesting season coincides with the bathing season, nature watchdogs and representatives of the Maritime Police, GNR, Alvor Parish Council, Municipal Civil Protection and EMARP participated, among others, as inspection agents, safety and cleanliness of beaches that can contribute to the reproductive success of both species.

Also within the scope of this activity, two information panels will be placed at the accesses to the Alvor dune system and the area where the chilreta colony is established, from year to year, will be delimited.
