Municipality of Castro Marim encourages home composting

Castro Marim intends to deliver domestic composters to the population

“Composting is Giving Life, is Valuing!” is the Home Composting Project promoted by the Municipality of Castro Marim, which intends to deliver domestic composters to the population.

The project is the first step of an action plan and operationalization of bio-waste management in the municipality, which aims to expand the range of solutions for the recovery of biodegradable urban waste, in this case domestic waste.

Anyone who wants to join the program and guarantee the domestic composter must register at the Municipal Support Office or send the registration form, available at website from the Municipality of Castro Marim, to gam@cm-castromarim.pt or by mail to the Municipality of Castro Marim, Dr Street. José Alves Moreira, no. 10, 8950-138 Castro Marim, until the 26th of April.

In a first phase, there will be 135 composters, so, according to the municipality, priority will be given to the first people to register, as long as they meet the participation rules: «permanent residence in the municipality of Castro Marim and housing that has a garden or patio, with space to place a domestic composter and later use the produced compost.»

The delivery of the composters will then be made on a date and place to be designated by the Chamber of Castro Marim. At that time, information materials on how to compost at home will also be delivered.

The composters delivered are property of the municipality, being assigned for a period of one year, but there is the possibility of renewal.

This is an initiative that is being developed as part of an application to the Environmental Fund's “Biobairros – da terra à terra” program, which provided funding for the implementation of separation and recycling solutions.

In addition to the domestic composters, community composters will be installed for those who do not have space with land to install the domestic composter and also to promote the separation of this type of waste in wider communities.
