The Loulé Chamber is appealing for the collaboration of the population to “enlarge” the return of the Festa Grande da Mãe Soberana, which takes place this Sunday, May 1, after two years of interregnum due to the pandemic.
The municipality asks "all residents of the city, particularly in the streets that make up the route of the Festival, to participate by decorating the balconies and windows with traditional bedspreads and also by throwing flower petals (distributed to residents by the municipality ), at the moment of passage of the procession with the image of Nossa Senhora da Piedade».
The Municipality of Loulé recalls that «the Festa Grande is the high point of the festivities of the Sovereign Mother, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Piedade, Patroness of Loulé. The largest religious event in the south of Fátima is an event that is part of the identity of the Loulétan community, strongly rooted in culture, traditions but above all in the essence of Loulé people as a people».
Furthermore, emphasizes the City Council, «it is one of the main tourist attractions in this county and a dynamic moment for the local economy, in particular in the restaurant and hotel sector».
This Sunday's program of the Festa Grande starts at 10:00 am, with the celebration of the Solemn Mass, in the Church of S. Francisco, where the 28th Meeting of the People of Cape Verde will also take place.
The image of the patron saint will then leave, in procession, towards Largo do Monumento Engº Duarte Pacheco, where, at 15:30, the Mass will take place.

The Great Procession will go through the main streets of the city and «will culminate with the apotheotic moment of the steep ascent to the Sanctuary, with the men carrying the litter carrying the heavy litter, a unique picture that moves not only the people of Loulés but all those who visit the city to attend the Feast of the Sovereign Mother», adds the municipality.
At 23:30 pm, next to the Ermida, a fireworks show takes place.
