Black starlings are stars of an Algarve “reality show”

Vita Nativa installed cameras in nest boxes of the Local Accommodation for Birds project

A reality show, but in which the stars are, instead of people, a couple of black starlings (Sturnus unicolor) and his descendants, is already “in the air”, within the scope of the Local Accommodation for Birds project.

Associação Vita Nativa installed video surveillance cameras in the nest boxes that were installed within the scope of this project and, «after several months of preparation», it was time «to share with society the daily life of the bird species that are occupying them', through a streaming live which you can access by following this link.

The nest box tenants arrived in early March.

“Straw after straw, for two weeks, they built the nest and made the accommodation more comfortable to receive the eggs. And there they are, at this moment being incubated by the mother», according to Vita Nativa.

“It won't be long before the little starlings are born. Considering that the incubation period of the species is 10 to 14 days, we expect that very soon (in a few days) the offspring will be born. This is the moment no one will want to miss. The only doubts that remain are: how many and when will the cubs be born? To find out, follow the life of this family of starlings live», challenges the association.

«The “Alojamento Local para Aves” won the 2018 National Participatory Budget and is in its second year of implementation. It is a project that results from a collaboration between the Associação Vita Nativa and the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests. During the 2021 nesting season, of the nearly 600 monitored nest boxes, around 40% were occupied by one or more bird species. Around 1000 offspring were born in them with the seal of the project. At the moment we have more than 1500 nest boxes installed throughout the Algarve», they conclude.
